Is AI art safe for kids?
Short answer: it depends on the app, not on AI. Here's the checklist we'd use as parents — and exactly how Imagine That answers each item.
The five questions that matter
- Can it chat? Open-ended chatbots are the biggest risk in kids' AI. Imagine That doesn't chat — a kid types a short idea and gets a picture.
- Is every prompt filtered? Look for moderation before generation, not just a report button afterward. We check every prompt and every uploaded photo, and a blocked prompt gets a friendly "let's try something else" nudge.
- Is the artwork private by default? Creations should belong to the family, not a public feed. Ours are private; sharing to the gallery is opt-in and human-reviewed.
- Can a kid spend money? There should be a hard gate. Ours is a 4-digit parent PIN plus a secure hosted checkout.
- Are there ads, feeds, or DMs? None here. No advertising, no follower counts, no messaging between users.
What we do specifically
- Prompt moderation. A rule-based kid-safety filter blocks violence, adult content, hate, and personal-information prompts before an image is ever made.
- Image-only output. No conversational AI, no story generation, no voice.
- Parent-held account. A grown-up creates the account and adds kid profiles; kids don't have separate logins or emails.
- Usage limits. Generation is capped daily, which prevents both runaway costs and endless-scroll behavior.
- Human gallery review. Anything submitted to the public gallery is approved by a person first, and shows only a first name and age.

What we're honest about
No filter is perfect. AI image models occasionally produce something odd — a weird hand, a garbled word, an image that doesn't match the idea. That's a quality problem, not a safety one, and the fix is the same: press Edit, add a note, try again. If you ever see something genuinely inappropriate, delete it from the account and tell us — that feedback tightens the filter.

›Is AI art safe for kids?
It depends entirely on the app. The risks in general-purpose AI tools are open-ended chat, unfiltered image output, ads, and social feeds. A kid-safe art tool should filter every prompt, generate images only (no open conversation), keep artwork private by default, and require a grown-up to approve any purchase.
›Can my child generate something inappropriate?
Every prompt runs through a moderation filter before generation, and blocked prompts get a friendly retry message instead of an error. Uploaded photos are also checked. If something slips through, parents can delete it from the family account and report it to us.
›Can my child spend money without me?
No. Checkout is gated behind a 4-digit parent PIN that only the grown-up sets, and payment happens on a secure Stripe-hosted page.
›Are my child's drawings or photos made public?
No. Creations are private to your family account. Sharing to the public gallery is an explicit, optional action, and gallery submissions are reviewed by a human before they appear.
›Is my child's data used to train AI models?
We don't sell family data or publish it. Images are generated through a commercial AI gateway and stored in your private account so you can reorder or remix them later. Full details are in our privacy policy.
›What age is this appropriate for?
Kids as young as three can describe an idea out loud for a grown-up to type, and it stays interesting through the teen years thanks to styles like grunge, streetwear, and minimal line art. Accounts are created and controlled by a parent.
